Breastfeeding offers many benefits to both the mother and the infant and every
pregnant woman should seriously consider it. For infant:

1. The composition of breast milk is just right for the human baby. It contains all
the nutrients needed by an infant in correct proportions.
2. Breastfeeding prevents a variety of infections. Immunological factors found in
colostrum contribute antibodies which fight infective bacteria.
3. Breastfeeding protects against some chronic disease such as non-insulin
dependent diabetes (NIDDM).
4. Breastfeeding provides a less danger of contamination as milk is not exposed to
the environment during preparation
5. Breastfeeding reduces the likelihood of allergic reactions since there are no
foreign substances being introduced such as proteins foreign to the child’s body.
6. Breastfeeding provides a sense of security and belonging and thus promotes
bonding between mother and child.

For mothers, breastfeeding:
1. Contracts the uterus
2. Delays ovulation as long as suckling is vigorous and consistent and therefore
lengthens birth intervals
3. Conserves iron stores ( amenorrhea)
4. Reduces risk of breast cancer
5. Protects bone density
6. Saves money and offers convenience.
