1. Nutrition education
The government of Kenya through the Ministry of Health educates mothers on the proper
ways of feeding the children especially those less than five years of age. Growth monitoring
during post-natal clinics help to check for nutrition in children. This is done during clinic
visits or in community outreach programmes. The mothers are also educated about the
importance of exclusive breast feeding up to 6 months of age and the order or sequence of
introducing complementary diets. They are also educated on the right foods to introduce at
six months of age. The importance of hygienic practices during food preparation so as to
prevent infections is also emphasized. In communities that have taboos that increase the risks
of developing PEM, local authorities are involved to educate on the dangers of such taboos.
- Food supplementation and rehabilitation
Food supplements high in protein e.g. dried skim milk are also provided to the
undernourished children in hospitals.
- Kitchen gardening and rearing of small animals
This is an effective method particularly in rural areas. Families are encouraged to plant
different plant varieties of food rich in proteins like soya beans. Besides this, through
community based organizations, families are encouraged to rear small animals like poultry
and rabbits to provide the animal source of proteins.
- Food diversification
This is also being encouraged through nutrition education. Consumption of foods from all
food groups and the use the locally available foods is encouraged.
- Ensuring food security at the household level.
- School feeding programmes
