The term culture was derived from the German word, Kultur, which means civilization. A cultured man was synonymous with a civilized man.
- Edward B. Taylor (1902) in Ezewu (1983:66). He defined culture as a `complex whole which included knowledge, beliefs, art, morals, laws, customs and any other capabilities acquired by man as a member of society.
- According to Gwarinda (1985:59), culture is "...the lived experience, a set of meanings and practices that are constituted in the day today life of a people within the given mode of production.
- Okot p'Bitek (1986) defines culture as `philosophy as lived and celebrated in a society'. It is the total lifestyle of a group of people.
- Thomas (1995:24) defines culture as "all the shared products of human groups. 'These products include physical objects and the beliefs, values and behaviours shared by the group."
- Jary and Jary (1995:139) define culture as "the human creation and use of symbols and artefacts."
- Thompson (1982:111) defines culture as "a whole way of life." This includes language beliefs, attitudes and values as well as the more visible characteristics of social behaviour such as dress and appearance.

Culture can therefore be defined as shared ideas, customs, beliefs and knowledge that characterize a way of life of a people in society.
