The term literature alludes to any form of recorded discourse ranging from politics,
advertisements, recipes and scholarly work. Our concern in Kenyan literature is in the
literary work.
Before the coming of the white man our people had oral literature in
the form of oral narratives, songs, poems, proverbs, riddles, tongue twisters and puns.
The oral material served as teaching and informing outlets and also for entertainment.
In its reflective nature, literature emits value as it criticizes issues in the society. In this
reflection, evil is castigated and good is appreciated. In this way literature declares
what life should be like and is not.
