Monitoring acute malnutrition in adults is measured using body mass index (BMI) by use of
weight and height. MUAC in combination with clinical signs is often used to screen adults for
admission to feeding centres. MUAC is particularly important for pregnant women, as body
weight is greater due to the growing foetus. In some emergencies, high rates of wasting and
stunting among adults and the elderly have been noted.
There is no international consensus on the cut-off points for classifying severe malnutrition in
adults using BMI or MUAC. The cut-offs shown are commonly used during emergencies.
