In 1960, Thomas Szasz published a controversial article in the prominent journal American Psychologist arguing that there is no such thing as mental illness. He stated that mental illness is a label that has been applied to problematic behaviors. He challenged the notion that mental illness is the same as neurological illness. He argued that mental illness is a
culturally-based judgment about whether an individual is behaving appropriately. Thus, behavior that is considered inappropriate or symptomatic of mental illness in one culture may be considered quite normal in another culture. Szasz was also concerned that the label of
mental illness was being used to free individuals of responsibility for their behavior. He felt that in modern times problems were often blamed on mental illness in the same way that problems
were attributed to witchcraft hundreds of years ago. He wanted mental health professionals to acknowledge the difficulty of daily life and to recognize that problems will always be present. He believed society would benefit by addressing problems directly and by abandoning the concept of mental illness. Szasz made some interesting points and his article generated lively discussions.
