i. Projection: attributing to others your weaknesses or characteristics you are unwilling to recognize in yourself. The victim is then rejected as the characteristics themselves.
ii. Frustration-aggression: Displacing anger and frustration onto another or others hence segregating and rejecting the victim/s.
iii. Insecurity and inferiority: Faced with the feelings of insecurity or inferiority one may feel better by putting others down.
iv. Authoritarianism: Inflexible and tolerant people have low tolerance to uncertainty, easily submit to authority and are threatened by unconventional behaviors. They label unconventional people immature, inferior and degenerate and have little time for them.
v. History: Historical experiences such as enslavement, colonialism or incidences of having been conquered may yield feelings of being superior and others inferior.
vi. Competition and exploitation: This can be economical, political, sporting etc that makes the frequent winner feel superior and others inferior. They assign demeaning characteristics to the losers such as lazy, heathen, immoral, dirty, stupid etc.
vii. Socialization patterns: prejudice is learned and transmitted from generation to generation through socialization process. Culture defines how members of a group behaves and how they treat those of other groups hence prejudice and discrimination.
viii. In the eyes of the beholder: Despite all the many suggested causes it is the individual who perceives and upholds the prejudice. Even in cases where the culture dictates it is not all who upholds the prejudice and discriminations.
ix. Institutionalized prejudice and discrimination: Prejudice is reflected in acts and policies and therefore discriminative social institutions.
