i. Biological theories
They explain that violence is caused by in-build aggressive instinct. According to Freud human beings have an aggressive instinct that drives them to enjoy hurting and killing others and themselves the thanatos. Robert Ardrey suggested that human beings have an instinct to conquer and control territory leading to violent interpersonal conflicts. It is seen as an adaptive characteristic mainly in mating. Males are generally aggressive than females and it has been attributed to male hormones.
ii. Frustration aggression theories
The theory explains violence as a product of tension due to frustrating situations. It results from commonsense that a frustrated often results to aggressive violent acts. The frustrations are projected elsewhere such as to innocent people during riots. It is noted that people in slums are more prone to higher levels of violence. The theories fail to explain why many frustrated people display violence.
