Santrock identifies the causes of juvenile delinquency as:

a. Heredity: Delinquent behaviors are caused by gene inherited from children. The behaviors can be traced down the family line.
b. Identity disorder: Due to unfulfilled developmental tasks children may fail in forming clear identity. They may engage in delinquent behavior to attract attention and compensate their weaknesses.
c. Community influences: Low class group produces a relatively bigger share of delinquent children that middle and upper class group. Low class culture may promote delinquency. This is mainly in search of attention and status. Apart from the low class culture where a community allows children observe many model of criminal activities delinquency cases increase (Santrock, (2000).
d. Family experiences: Feldman and Weiberger, (1994) notes that parents of delinquent children are less skilled in discouraging antisocial behaviors those parents of non delinquent. Parental monitoring is very important in determining whether children will become delinquent or not.
