The forms of punishments include:

a. Capital punishment: The offender is sentenced to death.
b. Imprisonment: The offender is confined in prison for life or a period of time depending on the crime committed and the intentionality.
c. Detention: this is confinement before being taken to court for judgment. In many countries it is not a form of punishment but confinement to protect the public from dangerous suspects of crime or pending investigation to safeguard evidence. In some countries heads of state and government use detention as a punishment against political offenders. It also applies to prisoners of war after being captured.
d. Monetary fines: Monetary fines are one of the oldest forms of punishment still used today. These fines may be paid to the state or to the victims as a form of reparation.
e. Probation and house arrest: These are also sanctions which seek to limit a person's mobility and his or her opportunities to commit crimes without actually placing them in a prison setting.
f. Parole: This is the early conditional release of a prisoner from a correctional facility while still serving out a sentence. The terms of the prisoner's release may include specific qualifiers to maintain continued parole eligibility. A specific type of parole is medical parole or compassionate release which is the release of prisoners on medical or humanitarian grounds. Conditions of parole often include things such as obeying the law, refraining from drug and alcohol use, avoiding contact with the parolee's victims, obtaining employment, and maintaining required contacts with a parole officer.
