Framing refers to the social construction of a social phenomenon often by mass media sources, political or social movements, political leaders, or other actors and organizations Cottam, M., et al (2010). It is an inevitable process of selective influence over the individual's perception of the meanings attributed to words or phrases. In social theory, framing refers to a schema of interpretation that individuals rely on to understand and respond to events. In other words, people build a series of mental filters through biological and cultural influences. They use these filters to make sense of the world. Framing is so effective because it is a heuristic or mental shortcut that may not always yield desired results; and is seen as a 'rule of thumb'.
