i. Conventional warfare is an attempt to reduce the enemy's capability through open battle. It is a declared war between existing states in which nuclear, biological, or chemical weapons are not used or only see limited deployment in support of conventional military goals and maneuvers.
ii. Unconventional warfare is an attempt to achieve military victory through acquiescence, capitulation, or clandestine support for one side of an existing conflict.
iii. Nuclear warfare is warfare in which nuclear weapons are the primary, or a major, method of coercing the capitulation of the other side, as opposed to a supporting tactical or strategic role in a conventional conflict.
iv. Civil war is a war where the forces in conflict belong to the same nation or political entity and are vying for control of or independence from that nation or political entity.
v. Asymmetric warfare is a conflict between two populations of drastically different levels of military capability or size. Asymmetric conflicts often result in guerrilla tactics being used to overcome the sometimes vast gaps in technology and force size.
vi. Cold warfare: The Cold War was a state of political and military tension after World War II between powers in the western block (the United State, its NATO allies and others) and powers in the East Block (the Soviet Union and its allies in the Warsaw Pact). It was characterized by tension between the warring sides and major regional wars though not directly between the leading parties, strengthening of military, psychological warfare, propaganda and espionage, and technological competition. It is normally a product of opposite ideologies and lack of tolerance. One major cold war was between the U.S.A. and U.S.S.R. after WWII (Gaddis, 2005).
vii. Chemical warfare: Poison gas as a chemical weapon is principally used and resulted in an estimated big loss of lives. Civilians and military personnel die from chemical weapon effects such as scarring of the lungs, skin damage, and cerebral damage. Various treaties have sought to ban its further use. Non-lethal chemical weapons, such as tear gas and pepper spray are widely used, sometimes with deadly effect.
viii. Psychological warfare: it involves propaganda and portrayal of the target as weak and the attacker as strong. It de-motivates the target by provoking fear hence avoidance.
