As societies continued to evolve and their modes of production became complex the communal economic system began to disintegrate. On the overall, the disintegration of the communal economic system is said to have been catalysed by the origins of social divisions of labour and exchange, rise of private property and classes.

The rise of patriarchy and the advancement in production activities enabled different
communities and classes (e.g women) to carry out different types of productive activities
depending on varying ecological locations. Individual members within communities also
began specialising in different types of productive activities. This in turn led to a marked
improvement in the organisation and productivity of labour.

According to Fredrick Engels in his book The Origin of the Family, Private Property and
State, the first major social division of labour occurred with the separation of pastoral
communities from the general mass of primitive communities.

Advancements in crop and livestock production engendered further societal
developments. Specializations in activities such as handicraft, pottery, weaving and
metallurgy among others came up. These improvements in tools and other items led to
corresponding changes in the relations of production.
