Marxist scholars argue that feudalism was a necessary stage in the development of
society after the collapse of the classical slave-economic system. They have identified
various characteristics that could be associated with the feudal economic system:-
1) Land ownership is concentrated in the hands of a few powerful and wealthy
people.
2) The majority of the people are landless and they farm on allotted land and in
return pay rent or offer services to the owner.
3) The landless peasants are directly dependent on the landed aristocracy for
survival i.e. they are vassals.
4) There is production of surplus product for feudal lords in the form of feudal
rent. Exploitation of peasants also exists.
5) Complex state laws restrict the peasants to the lord’s estate.
6) Lords have an independent army and judicial system. The decentralized
military and judicial systems exist in a loose union under the king.
7) An independent church allied to the state exists and provides the moral basis
or justification for the feudal institution/system.
8) There exists an overall powerful despotic king.
