According to Jean piajet:
I. Intellectual development progresses chronologically
II. Teachers of mathematics should create an environment which stimulates a child to participate in activities perform experiments, seek and verify their own answers.
III. Teachers should have knowledge of how children mature and what learning difficulties, abilities, disabilities and limitations children have.
This helps the teacher to cater to individual differences of learners.
IV. According to piajet children should not be rushed but rather should be allowed to grow through the stages at their own pace
V. Piajet also suggested that educators should appreciate individual differences as children go through the stages at different paces.
From piajet's work we can deduce that the child’s concept of number, space, volume, weight, time has made a major influence on mathematics education.
Piaget showed that these concepts are constructed from a series of experiences and that two forms of construction are possible, i.e.
- Accommodation–this is the modification of existing concepts.
- Assimilation–absorption of new experiences.
