Piajet's theory states that children learn by actively constructing knowledge using schema.
A schema is a frame of organizing and interpreting information found in a child's mind.
According to piajet, there are two ways children adapt their schemas i.e. assimilation and
accommodation.
Assimilation involves a child incorporating new knowledge into existing schema.
While Accommodation occurs when a child adjusts to new information
Piajet also came up with age related stages which a child goes through.
Sensory motor 0-2 years
Pre- operational 2-7years
Intuitive thought 4-7(sub-stage)
Concrete operational 7-11years
Formal operational 11-15years
He suggested that children should be left to go through these stages at their own pace and a child may only move to a higher stage after completing of a stage.
Assessing piajet's theory we can say that;
. Children learn by being active
. Children operate as lone discoverers
. Children should discover for themselves
. Teacher should act only as a provider of materials for learning.
. Cognitive development is age related
. Children are unable to extend their cognitive abilities beyond their stage of development.
