I. Sensory memory
Collects information from the 5 common senses I.e. touch, sight, smell, taste, and hearing
Information is stored here for only a fraction of a second.
II. Short term memory
This consists of what in our consciousness at any given time. The information can be retained here for about 20 seconds where it is categorized on the basis of how important it is (coding). Meaningful information is transferred for long-term memory.
III. Long-term memory
Is a permanent storage facility that can store unlimited amounts of information to LTM requires a process known as encoding.
