Stage 1: paying attention to learning materials.
Paying attention involves listening and observing and ignoring many things happening around a learner.
The teacher should teach these habits to his/her students.

Stage 2: Gaining interest in what is to be learnt
Once attention has been captured, motivation must follow.
The best motivation is self-imposed motivation. However this does not come easily and therefore the teacher should impose external motivation to encourage intrinsic motivation to occur.
Externally imposed motivation includes fear or reward.

Stage 3: Developing skills and understanding
Skills are physical and mental abilities that require a high degree of coordination between the body and brain. Once learnt, they continue with little or no effect.

Stage 4: Experimenting with what is learnt
Once we possess a certain amount of knowledge or skill, our immediate desire is to use it.
New knowledge and experiences invite experimentation and thus continue until they are fully
integrated with previous experiences.

Stage 5: Applying learning
The ultimate value of knowledge lies in using it. Knowledge not used is soon forgotten.
The teacher should make effort to help learners see the relevance of such knowledge so they can apply it.
