Piajet's theory states that children learn by actively constructing knowledge using their schemas where a schema is a framework that exists in individual's mind to organize and interpret information.
Schemas can be as simple as schema of a car or as complex as "what constitutes the universe"
In this light, piajet defined development by four principle factors:
I. Maturation
Refers to the unfolding of the genetic plan of life maturation is important in learning.
II. Experience:
Development is facilitated by the active interaction of their learner with his/her environment.
III. Social transmission
Refers to the information and customs that are transmitted from parent and other people in the child's environment
IV. Equilibration
This is the process by which learners seek a balance between what they know and what they
experiencing.
When children are faced with new information which calls for different analysis or activity they enter a state of disequilibrium. When it occurs they must change the way they deal with the information to establish a new state of equilibrium
