1) Physical facilities and sitting arrangements
The provision and arrangement of furniture and equipment can affect the way children work and play. This should be done bearing in mind young children especially these in early childhood and
primary Education who are active, curious, and move frequently from one place to another. The learners bodies are growing fast therefore the furniture provided should support healthy
development and be age appropriate.
2) Arrangement of materials and equipment
Display of classroom materials is an important an important part of the learning environment-the way it is done can affect learning.
3) Learning Corners
These are common in ECD and primary education. The recommended ones that a teacher can establish to maximize learning and occupy learner’s free time include the following:
i. Language Corner- Contains charts, flashcards, alphabet, cut outs and books. Among which are used for storage of materials. The wall adjacent to it is used to hang or display other language related materials.
ii. Mathematics Corner- Consist of materials used in mathematics activities which include books, pencils, charts, flashcards and counters such as bottle tops, stick and stones. The boxes used here contain materials for mathematics activities.
iii. Science Corner- holds all the charts, flash cards, empty containers, and a collection of items such as stones, seeds, plants, potted plants, weather charts, water containers
and all equipment for science experiments.
iv. Life skill corner- has tables and boxes to hold such items as wall charts, story books, costumes, and other materials used to train leaners on life skills.
v. Religious Corner- has a wall, table and boxes to hold such items as wall charts, boxes for picture cards, costumes used to dramatize, religious story books and other documents.
4) Grouping Learners
During actual interaction, the teacher would not be expected to interact with the learners following the teacher to learner’s pattern; other patterns namely teacher-to-learner, learner-
to-teacher, and leaner-to-learner patterns would be recommended.
5) Class Control/ Management and discipline.
This encompasses all behaviors that regulate learners into desired activities so that attention is directed towards the intended activities for the purpose of reaping maximum benefits from the learning experiences. Discipline is necessary in class control; it entails all the processes of guiding learners to desirable behavior. A learner who is self-disciplined has self-control hence class management or class control goes hand in hand with class discipline since one is at stake without the other.
