The major classes are classified according to structural components. Three major classes are;
a. Simple lipids; those that yield fatty acids and glycerol hydrolysis. In this we have two sub-classes i.e. acylglycerol (yield fatty acid and glycerol) and waxes (yield long chain fatty acids and long chain glycerol).
b. Compound lipids; yield fatty acids, glycerol and other compounds like sugars, protein etc. sub-classes include phospholipids e.g. lecithin. These contain phosphate group. The other subclass is glycolipids.
c. Derivative lipids; these are soluble in polar solvent and insoluble in water. They contain many compound substances. Examples are steroids, fat soluble vitamins, bile acids, Carotenoid substances etc.
