1. Place items 1 to 11/2 inches from the table edge so that handles are lined up and the utensils are even with the plate
2. Forks are placed to the left of plate, dessert fork is sometimes placed above the center of the plate.
3. Knives and spoons are placed to the right of the plate
4. Arrange flatware in order of use, from outside toward plate – (salad fork at the left of the dinner fork if the salad is the first course, otherwise, to the right of the dinner fork if the salad is served with dinner)
5. Forks are set with the tines up
6. Knives are set with the sharp cutting edge towards the plate
7. Spoons are set with the bowls facing up
8. The butter knife is placed on the bread/ butter plate
