The pinna receives, collects, and concentrates sound waves in the auditory canal (meatus).
From the auditory meatus, sound waves are passed on to the tympanic membrane (eardrum), causing it to vibrate.
The vibrations are picked up by the first ossicles, the malleus, the incus and then the stapes.
The stapes pass the vibrations to the oval window, which amplifies the sound waves 22 times.
When the oval window vibrates, it causes the fluid in the cochlea to move.
The sensory hairs inside the cochlea vibrate when the fluid moves, leading to mechanical distortion in the sensory cells. These transmit nerve impulses to the auditory nerves.
The auditory nerve then transmits the impulses to the brain for interpretation.
