A variable is an observable and measurable characteristic of the study which can be manipulated and controlled by a researcher. The value of variable can differ at various times for the same object or person, example of variables include age , sex, social economic status , level of education and production units.
There are three main types of variables namely.
a)Dependent variable
This a variable that is affected by other variable hence indicate variables arising from other variables
b) Independent variables
Is the variable that is manipulated and controlled by researcher in order to determine its effects on dependent variables e.g. Motivation and performance in school or company. In this case, motivation is independent variable a while performance is dependent variable.
c) Extraneous variables
Another variable that may affect the result of the study as result of lack of control of the study by a researcher e.g. lightening, hailstones or drought.
