A sample is a subset of a population which is selected to represent a population during study.
Types of sampling.
a) Simple random sampling
A simple random sampling is sample obtained from the population in away that samples of the same size have equal chances of being selected and selection of one subject does not affect the selection of the next subject . This sampling strategy involves the use of lottery method where by names or numbers are written on a tag that identifies elements of a population to be sampled . THE tags are placed in a container and well stirred .A tag is then drawn from the container and the process is repeated until the required number of tags is obtained.
b) Stratified Random Sampling
This is a sampling technique in which subjects are arranged according to their subgroups. the then researcher select participants randomly from each group for example members may be arrange according to sex, income , color , tribe etc.
c) Systematic Random Sampling
This is where researcher selects a participant after a given interval. For this method to be biased and to avoid sampling error participant should be randomly arranged so that each category is represented Alphabetical order may not be good .The basic rule to determine a sampling interval is to divide the total population by the sample size for example if your population consist of 8000 and your sample size is 20 the divide 8000 by 20 this means that every 20th participant one is chosen till the sample is obtained.
d. Cluster sampling
This is similar to the stratified sampling; the difference is that the population has a natural sub division which could be social status, geographical etc. Here a researcher select particular group of case sample. It is used when the population is very large or scattered over a large area All members in the group sample are used
