Define avalanche and its impacts on the environment

Answers

Ruth
It is a type of landslide involving a large mass of snow, ice and rock debris that slides
and fall rapidly down a mountainside. Avalanches are initiated when a mass of snow
and ice begins to rapidly move downhill because of the overload caused due to a large
volume of new snowfall.

The impact on the environment is manifested in the form of:
1. Uprooted trees and degraded soil
2. Buried building and settlements
3. Damage to crops and plantation
4. Frequent roadblocks in the hilly areas
5. Injuries and death to humans and animals
