i. Process layout
Layouts for a production system reflect a conceived organization of resources to achieve a
certain goal besides satisfying certain space constraints. In manufacturing engineering process layout is designed for the floor plan of a plan which aims to improve efficiency by arranging equipment according to its functions. The production line should ideally be designed to eliminate waste materials flows, inventory handling and management.
In handling process layout, the work station and machinery are not arranged to a particular
production sequence.
ii. Product layout
A product layout refers to a production system where the work stations and equipments are
located along the line of production as with assembly lines. Usually work units are modeled
along a line by a conveyor. Work is done in small amounts at each of the work stations on the line. To use the product layout, the total work must be divided into small tasks that can be assigned to each of the work stations.
Paced lines can use some sort of conveyor that move output along a continuous rate so that workers can perform operation on the product as it goes.
On un paced line workers build work stations to allow a variable work pace. Product layouts
efficiency is often balanced through the use of line balancing.
iii. Hybrid layouts
Hybrid layouts modify and or combine some aspects of three basic layouts types to satisfy the needs of a particular situation.
iv. Fixed position layouts
These production techniques are used to assemble products that are too large, bulky or fragile to safety or effectively more to allocation for completion. In fixed position layout personnel, supplies and equipment are brought to the site where the product will be assembled rather than product being moved through an assembly station.
