• The group discussion method - small group discussions or class discussions. The discussion can be guided by the teacher's questions. A teacher can use concept circle activities (give students words which are important in understanding a certain theme, let them discuss the connections the concepts have e.g. in The Merchant of Venice you can give the words:
mercy, justice, money, law, marriage, religion), mapping activities (draw map of towns covered in a novel e.g. Coming to Birth by Oludhe Mcfioye)
• The question and answer method - the teacher's questions should not only be plain sense or information questions. They should be higher order questions as well, such as, "How do you
judge the honesty of this character? The questions should be about evaluation, analysis, e.t.c. a teacher can ask a series of short questions on themes, characterization, style.
• The discovery method - the teacher can guide the students on what to discover. They should discover through reading a text.
• Debates - on themes, characterization
• Role play -- students assume the roles of fictional characters. They pretend to be Odili, Chief Nanga, Portia, Paulina etc. Other members of the class ask him/her why he did this or that etc. it helps students relate literature to own experiences.
• Dramatization - important scenes in a play, novel can be dramatized
