These are mechanisms through which social norms that reflect the cultural values of society are upheld. There are two basic means through which norms are enforced. This is through internalization and sanctions. Internalization is the process through which a norm becomes a part of an individual's personality, thereby conditioning him to conform to society's expectations. Sanctions are rewards or punishments used to enforce conformity to norms.
