Adolescents have a major impact on culture largely as a consequence of their increasing affluence and independence and involvement in vices like drugs, sex and violence. Though the community expects parents to be role models for the young, adolescents are particularly sensitive to comments from parents and others. They are easily offended; taking everything that is said as criticism. Adolescents are likely to be infuriated by parental criticism of their clothes, appearance, hairstyle or friends. Failure by parents to recognize the sensitiveness of the adolescent is a major cause of friction in families.

One key reason for friction between parents and teenagers is failure by the former to recognize the adolescent's transition from dependence to independence. The more parents try to control them, the more they underestimate the maturity of the teenager and the more rebellious they become. Another source of friction is the adolescent's behaviour. Spans of moodiness, sulkiness, quarrelsomeness and obstinate behaviour such as rudeness are common features of adolescence. Many adolescents look for faults in their parents. At times parents are unable to understand why adolescents behave this way. Rebellion against all that seems acceptable in society and against the older generation impacts society. It may have serious consequences for the youth like sexual promiscuity that can lead to Aids, pregnancy or venereal diseases.

The use of symbols by youths is at times difficult to interpret and results in a lot of friction in society. The piercing of ear lobes by males and tattoos may carry a particular meaning that is only recognized by the youth. Language is a significant component in any culture. How-ever, the language used by youths, for example sheng (Kenyan urban slang) can only be understood by youth groups. Values which the youth hold may at times not conform to society's expectation. Sexual promiscuity among youths, though regarded by them as a sign of maturity and advancement, is frowned on by society. According to Theodore (1969), the use of drugs, sex and deviance among the youth is a replacement of cultural values which are corrupt, lifeless or boring by alternative standards and liberation values.
