1. According to Plato, a relationship exists between society and education. He emphasized that a society is stably organized when each individual is doing that for which he has aptitude by nature in such a way as to be useful to others (or to contribute to the whole to which he belongs). It is the business of education to discover these aptitudes and progressively train them for social use. Plato affirmed emphatically that the place of the individual in society should not be determined by birth or wealth or any conventional status, but by his own nature as discovered in the process of education. He believed that an education could be given which would sift individuals, discovering what they were good for, and supplying a method of assigning each to the work in life for which his nature fits him. If each individual was allowed to play the role he was suitable for, each doing his part and never transgressing, order and unity of the whole society would be maintained. Plato believed that unless members knew what was good and expected for society, they would have no criterion for rationally deciding what the possibilities were which should be promoted or how social arrangements should be ordered. To him, knowledge of the final and permanent good of society was to be achieved through education. He was of the opinion that education proceeded ultimately from the patterns furnished by institutions, customs and laws. Only in a just state would these be such as to give the right education and only those who had the appropriately trained minds would be able to recognize the end and ordered principle of things.
On this basis, it is clear that Plato recognized the educational significance of social arrangements. He also recognized the function of education in discovering and developing personal capacities in individuals and training them to connect with the activities of others and fit in society.

2. Marxist Theory
According to the Marxist Theory, society always has an economic base which gives it character. The economically dominant group determines the educational system to be followed by the whole society. It imposes what it considers of value to the subordinate group(s). This gives rise to a super structure which facilitates the operation of the economic base. Education therefore interacts with the economic base, giving advantage to the dominant group. Through learning institutions society ensures that ideas, practices, behaviours and values are cultivated in individuals; creating `norms' that are generally in the interest of the ruling class. Learning institutions therefore help reinforce societal acceptance of ruling class values. From a Marxist sociological perspective therefore, education is an arena of class struggle. The ruling class uses education to guarantee its rule and dominance in society. It establishes institutions that promote ideas, skills and social habits that suit it.
Through cultural selection, the dominant group structures various curricula that will ensure the success of its goals.
