a) Statistical groups
This is a group of youths with an identical style of hair cut, tattoos or dressing style. They can be identified by observing a certain locality.
They may hardly interact with each other. This group has no sociological significance because membership does not necessarily affect one's behaviour.
b) Primary groups
These groups are termed `primary' because they give an individual the earliest experiences of social participation and unity. Members of a Primary Group are aware that they belong to a group and that they have common interests and goals. The family is the smallest and most important primary group. Relationships in a Primary Group may or may not involve blood relationship. A Primary Group is characterized by:
• Personal relationship since there is face to face contact between members;
• Intimate and enduring relationships between members;
• Small size.
c) Secondary groups
These groups are categorized into two:
- Permanent groups
This consists of groups such as a nation and church organizations. They are permanent since they have existed before most individual members joined them and continue their existence if any member dies or opts out. These groups continue permanently since their characteristic patterns are transmitted to new members. They are united by recurrent functions, a common outlook or a shared belief.
- Temporary or transitional groups
These groups are not permanent. They are usually formed for an immediate purpose and disbanded once the purpose is achieved. The relationship within them is temporary but members are bound together as they engage in an active endeavor to attain a particular objective.
