This is a position within the social hierarchy and division of labour. It is the esteem attached to a position occupied by designated individuals in a social system. It dictates how a person occupying the position is expected to behave in response to objects and people (Ezewu, 1983). According to Thomas (1995), a status is a socially defined position in a group or society. It is a way of defining the relationships among individuals in terms of their rights and obligations.
As a social system, the school has several clearly defined statuses, which people who possess specified qualifications are expected to occupy. For example, the status of the principal is not permanently attached to one particular person because anybody can be promoted to the post. The occupant of the status is expected to behave in a specific way in his/her interaction with others in the school system. This is referred to as status obligation. The principal also expects. others in the school to behave in a certain way towards him/her. This is called status right. It consists of what a person can legitimately expect from others when he/she is occupying a particular status. Students expect that the principal - due to his status - is able to protect them and meet their needs. It is therefore obligatory for him to do so. The deputy principal, teachers and students have their statuses to which are attached legitimate rights and obligations. The principal owes certain obligations to the teachers and students. On the other hand, they are expected to be-have towards him in a certain way according to his status rights.
Each individual in society occupies several statuses. One can be a teacher, a mother, a wife, a choir member and a secretary of a welfare association all at the same time.
