- Ascribed status:
This is a status that is assigned according to standards which are beyond a person's control. It is not based on individual ability, effort or accomplishment. It is based on a person's inherited traits or is assigned automatically when a person reaches a certain age. Ascribed Status includes gender (male or female), family heritage and race.

- Achieved status:
This is a status acquired on the basis of some skill, knowledge or ability. People have some control over achieved statuses.
