a) Vertical mobility
This refers to the movement between social classes or strata. This type of mobility can be either upward or downward depending on whether an individual moves to a higher or lower position in the stratification system. For example, promotion from a class teacher to a school principal or froth a teacher to a member of parliament may move an individual from the working class to the middle class. This movement is accompanied by changes in income and prestige. The income should either be very high or low in order to call for a change in class/status.

b) Horizontal mobility
This refers to movement within a social class or stratum. An example is to move from one job to another of equal social ranking and income. However, the salary is sometimes higher than before but not too high as to change the mover's status. An example of this would be a teacher moving from one school to another.

c) Intergenerational mobility
This refers to status differences between generations in the same family. The focus is on differences between people's class of origin – their parents' social class - and their current position in the stratification sys-tern. A daughter of a peasant farmer who becomes a lawyer experiences Intergenerational Mobility.
