a) When technologies change, the jobs available to workers also change. Although this can cause downward mobility for those caught in the shift, it often creates upward mobility for the next generation of workers. Advances in communication technology such as ATMS have made it possible for banks to serve many customers using less man-power. This has greatly reduced the need for unskilled manpower. The result has been upward mobility as people have trained and sought employment in higher status occupations. In the manufacturing sector, manual workers have been replaced by machines. Due to the millions rendered jobless by this modernization, a new group of factory workers are studying for and aiming at higher status jobs primarily in the service industry.

b) Social mobility has also been affected by changes in merchandising patterns. Recent changes in Kenya include an explosion in the credit industry, greater emphasis on insurance, increased transactions in real estate and rapid growth in personal service, particularly private schools and hospitals. These changes have created a larger white-collar work force.

c) An increase in the general education level of most Kenyans has promoted upward mobility. Parallel and open learning programmes have given many Kenyans easier access to education. This is a phenomenon that will lead to mobility of some kind in society.
