a) Changes in the economy:
Among the primary causes of downward mobility are changes in the economy. Shifts in donor funding, technologies and consumer tastes can alter the demand for labour. Individuals find themselves jobless and with skills that are no longer marketable. These people are likely to experience downward mobility. Retrenchment has created downward mobility for many. Those rendered redundant lose their permanent income and subsequently, the social standing that comes with such income.

b) Economic recession:
In times of economic recession, good jobs are not as plentiful. As a result, even highly qualified graduates become jobless or accept jobs that pay peanuts and some that they were not trained for. These changes can lead to extreme poverty. Those affected may be forced to occupy inferior positions.
