Organizations have been defined in various ways:
- Etzioni (1964) defines organizations as "social units that pursue specific goals, which they are structured to serve.
- "Gwarinda (1993:82) defines an organization as "a collection of people whose behaviour is guided and coordinated to achieve perceived goals."
- Jary and Jary (1995:464) define organization as "a type of collectivity established for the pursuit of specific aims or goals. It is characterized by a formal structure of rules, authority, a division of labour and limited membership or admission."
- According to Ezewu (1983:94), social organizations can be described operationally as "the ways in which human beings' conduct becomes socially organized."

- Organizations can thus be defined as "a collection of people whose behaviour is guided and coordinated to achieve specified goals."
