a) Operating core
This consists of those members who perform the basic work related directly to the production of goods and services. In schools, teachers are the Operating Core as they carry out the basic work of teaching pupils to become what the Community intends them to be.
b) Strategic apex
These are members who are charged with the overall responsibility of the organization. They ensure that the set goals are achieved and the needs of the owners of the organization are met. In school, the head teacher, deputy head and the senior teacher constitute the Strategic Apex.
c) Middle line
This refers to members who have direct authority over operations but do not constitute part of the Strategic Apex. They are first line sn-pet-visors and managers. In school, they are the heads of departments.
d) Techno structure
These are analysts who effect standardization in the organization. They evaluate operations and make relevant recommendations. In the educational sector, they tend to be external. They include the District Education Officers (D.E.O.s), Assistant Education Officers (A.E.0s) and school inspectors.
e) Support staff
These members provide support to the organization from `outside' the operational flow. They are not part of the Operating Core. They are not a mainstay of the organization but a component of it. Support Staff include secretaries; clerks;' bursars technicians, gardeners, drivers, cook and all those people who enable the Operating Core to function. They are vital to the success of the school.
