Discuss the types of social structures in schools

1. Hierarchical structure schools:
These are schools that have few positions at the top. Activities are carried out officially. The head teacher does not deal directly with the teachers and students but passes information to the deputy or senior teacher from whom others get instructions. The head teacher determines all policies, activities and techniques of the group, dictates the work to be done and is personal in criticism while remaining `aloof' in demeanor. Such schools emphasize conformity and obedience and by extension, authoritarianism. Some `elite' and high cost private schools in Kenya practice this concept.

2. Flat organizational structure:
In flat organizational structures, everybody tends to be involved in the day to day administration of the school. The head teacher does not adhere very strictly to the official channels. He/she encourages dialogue and ensures that all policies are decided by the group. He/she gives technical advice while providing alternatives for members' choices: The head teacher is objective in criticism and tries to be a `regular' or `normal' member of the group. He/she is accessible; one does not have to go through someone to reach him/her. Bureaucracy is reduced to a bare minimum.
