Teachers are people who are involved in the process of providing information, knowledge and skills to other people.
Ezewu (1983) points out that in the formal school system, there are two categories of members: the officials and the students. The officials are normally called teachers, except for the non- academic staff. The status, `teacher', also covers the principal, deputy principal and school counselor. The concept of teaching includes what all these officials are expected to do as their contribution to attaining the goals of the school.
Based on the above, it can be inferred that teachers give instruction to learners and are charged with the responsibility of facilitating the acquisition of knowledge, skills and positive attitudes. Teaching is, in a broad sense, work or service teachers give to learners and for which they get remuneration. Teachers are classified into various categories: pre-primary, primary, secondary and tertiary levels. Some teachers are trained specifically for learners with special need such as the blind, deaf and mentally challenged.
