Teacher training institutions are the socialization settings for processing individuals for the teaching profession. Before they perform the teaching, guidance and administrative roles in school, teachers should have been processed for these roles. The quality of the socialization process is very important to the discharge of the functions of teaching, guidance and administering.
a) Ezewu (1983) identifies three theories that motivate individuals to train as teachers: Individuals choose careers that are either popular in their locality or those that conform to the social standards of the group to which they belong. Based on this theory, in a locality without other job opportunities, the people are likely to demand teaching.
b) The, more rewarding a career is in terms of the conditions of service including the monetary reward and job security, the more likely it is that individuals would be willing to take it up. The individual has alternatives and his choice is strictly governed by the anticipated reward.
c) Individuals who want to uphold certain values they consider satisfying tend to take up careers that present them with the opportunity to pursue such values.
According to Ezewu (1983), student teachers who opted for training as teachers because teachers are knowledgeable and well behaved be-carne successful in performing their functions.

Prospective teachers should be properly prepared for their roles. Specific goal of teacher training colleges are:
a) To produce highly motivated, conscientious arid successful classroom teachers for all levels of education;
b) To develop in the individuals, a spirit of inquiry, creativity, rationalism and a sense of belonging;
c) To make future teachers intellectually, professionally and socially capable.

For teachers to succeed in their task, teacher training colleges must attain their goals; that is, produce teachers who possess the above qualities. In Kenya, however, it has been discovered that some teachers particularly at primary school level are sometimes ill equipped for their- tasks: Some had poor qualifications in subject areas like mathematics yet are expected to teach and assist learners to excel in these subjects. The syllabus of primary teacher training colleges is often too wide, resulting to inadequate training. This can and does affect teacher performance.
