According to this theory, most social change is the result of conflicts between groups with divergent interests. In most cases, conflicts stem from disputes over the legitimacy of authority or over access to power and wealth. Social conflict occurs due to the forces of antagonism or opposition that may exist among and within social groups; with each group having different
interests and values or expectations. Consequently, such groups can begin to oppose each other's views, resulting in disagreement, disharmony and even instability.
The conflict theory is rooted in Karl Marx's theory of class conflict. Marx held that all human history is the history of class conflict. He pointed out that, throughout history, all societies have been subjected to conflicts between the people who have power and those without Social change results from efforts of the powerless to gain power. Usually, these efforts involve violent overthrow of those in power Marx saw violence as a necessary part of social change.
The conflict theory relied mostly on the use of economic and political components with regard to how denials could trigger social conflict in society. The notion of the "haves" and the have nots" is "well documented in many of Marx's works. In particular, he showed the possibility that when the latter group realizes it is being excluded from and denied participation in political power, the economic sphere :and from resources, social conflict will be inevitable. Through social conflict, social change is bound to follow.
In a nutshell, the Marxist model suggests that change will only come to society when the means of economic production and political systems held by a few revert-to majority ownership of property without class distinctions and conflict.
