a) Ethnocentrism:
Social change that occurs from outside a group often meets strong resistance. People tend to believe that their own ideas and ways of doing things are the best. This is referred to as ethnocentrism. Extreme ethnocentrism can make any type of compromise or communication between individuals and groups difficult or even impossible (Thomas,1995).
In schools, students are likely to resist changes such as new school rules prohibiting visitors or cancelling visiting days. They may feel that this interferes with their rights. In Kenya, the change of the educational system from 7-4-2-3 to 8-4-4 system has met with a lot of resistance. This is mainly because the latter system is regarded as foreign and unsuitable for the country.

b) Cultural Lag:
Both in society and schools, people tend to welcome changes in material cultural traits more readily than changes in non-material cultural traits. The introduction of computers in schools is more likely to gain acceptance than restrictions on school outings. It is easier to convince a student to buy a textbook than to support needy cases. A situation in which some aspects of culture change less rapidly or lag behind other aspects of the same culture is called Cultural Lag (Thomas, 1995).

c) Vested Interests:
The person who is satisfied with the way things are in the present situation is bound to resist any effort to change the status quo. For many individuals, the present - even if it is imperfect - is better than the unknown. Students may oppose the introduction of Saturday preps because they fear it may interfere with their relaxation. There is a tendency to resist any idea that threatens one's security or standard of living.
