It shows how consonants are described in terms of manner of articulation and place of articulation. The shaded parts in grey show the sound combinations proved impossible. For example it is considered that no language can have a velar trill. The blank cells on the chart (neither shaded nor having a symbol) indicate combinations of categories that are possible but have not been observed in any language.
