Tongue height can also be called the Vertical Tongue Position. It refers to the position of the tongue in relation to the roof of the mouth. How high or low the tongue is in relation to the roof of the mouth? A high vowel is produced with the tongue close to the roof of the mouth. It is also called a closed vowel. In a closed vowel, there is contact with the sides of the tongue, with upper back tip and the sides of the mouth. In a low (open) vowel, there is no contact of articulators.
It gives us four ways of classifying the vowels:
-Close (high)
-Close mid (half high)
-Open mid (half low)
-Low open(low)
