Answers

Francis
a) Grammatical: It is used to mark syntactic boundaries through filled and unfilled pauses.
It is also used to disambiguate structures that are syntactically similar.

b) Accentual: this is the placement of intonation that is combined with stress to focus on specific meanings in a sentence. To accent means to stress or to emphasize.

c) Discoursal function: Here, tone is used to highlight features of context where communication is taking place. It is associated with the formality and informality of a communication encounter. For example:
o Church- hushed pitch
o Bar-rowdy pitch
o Court- official pitch

d) Attitudinal function: It is used to express mood and feelings. You tell from the way someone says something whether it is positive or negative.
