What is a phoneme?

Francis
An abstract meaning distinguishing unit. It can also be said to be a target sound. A phoneme can be vocalic or consonantal. It is enclosed with slashes. For example/p, b, a, i, d, m/.An essential property of a phoneme is that it functions contrastively. When we substitute one sound for another in a word and end up with a change in meaning, those two sounds are said to be phonemes. Sip/zip, fine/vine.
