a) Free Variation:
This occurs when two sounds can be used interchangeably without meaning change in the words.
This means that the free variants can occur in the same environment.

b) Minimal Pairs:
When two words are identical in form except for a contrast in one phoneme occurring in the same position, the two words are described as minimal pairs.

c) Minimal Set:
When a group of words are differentiated each one from the other by changing one phoneme always in the same position, we have a minimal set.

d) Broad and Narrow Transcription:
A distinction can be made between the production of phonemic transcriptions and phonetic transcripts. When phoneticians transcribe an utterance, they usually do so by noting how the sounds convey differences in meaning. They concern themselves with describing the significant articulations rather than the total set of movements of the vocal organs.
