1)The positional technique:
This entails locating the people holding key positions in the community and in various organizations. In a local area this may entail finding out who the chief, assistant chief, headmen, chairmen of local organizations, head teachers, church leaders, field workers etc. These people represent the major institutions in the community who are power holders and influential in initiating and sanctioning policy.

2) The decision making technique:
This calls for identifying the names of persons who have been involved in making decisions on important issues to the community or have led to initiation or successful completion of projects in the community. Attention is focused at issues and effort is made to identify chain of individuals who are or have been involved in making decisions on any of the issues. Statements of issues given by such people can also be reported and analyzed whether at meetings or newspapers.

3)The reputation technique:
Helps to identify persons who are presumed in the community and appears most suited for locating the power structure in the community. It entails finding out about these actors from knowledgeable members of the community who may include persons identified under the positional technique and certain other persons who are in a position to know what is going on in this community or, who you would go for support if you wanted to propose something for the community.

4).The social metric technique:
This explores the pattern of interaction between members of a community. In community work, it can be used to find out members of a community who are consulted more often. Persons identified by this technique could be the opinion leaders who may be influential on certain issues such as agricultural innovations, business, health care etc.

5).Self-report method:
In this technique, respondents may be asked to report the various leadership positions they have held in the community in the past and the present. They can state the type of position they have held, in which organization and for how long. From these reports , respondents could be ranked on leadership scale.
